The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus Social Welfare Training Centre invites all the the Distinguished lecture presented by Professor Lena Dominelli, Professor of Applied Social Sciences, University of Durham, UK. The seminar will be held at the Sybil Francis Seminar Room, 12 Gibraltar Camp Way, UWI Mona on Saturday 9th February, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.
The lecture will investigate how poverty has increased within nations and across nations; the earth's fragile eco-balance has been degraded; armed conflicts are erupting in all continents; and climate change threatens to engulf those least responsible for the condition. Alongside this, the obscenity of a few people holding more wealth than several billions of the earth's residents is being legitimated as an immutable 'fact of life'. Professor Dominelli considers this an unjust state of affairs and asks what can be done by looking at who are the winners and losers in this rapidly globalizing world and what sites of resistance have arisen.
