This Gala event heralds the week-long Gathering of Graduates at the Mona Campus. The Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne will host a formal cocktail reception on the beautiful lawns of the Mona Visitors' Lodge under the stars and a Mona moon. Invitees will include resident and visiting alumni, a cross section of the university community including representatives of the student body, representatives of Government, the Private Sector and the Diplomatic Corps. The UWI Panoridim Steel Band will entertain the guests.

The Jamaica Golf Association/UWI Golf Development Foundation was established in 1998 in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of The University of the West Indies. It was agreed then that each year a Golf Tournament would be held to raise funds to create and maintain a Scholarship Fund to enable suitably qualified and talented persons to acquire tertiary education at the UWI while pursuing excellence in the sport of golf. On Sunday, July 13 during Convocation Week, the eleventh staging of the UWI Golf Classic will take place at the panoramic Caymanas Golf & Country Club just outside Kingston. The starting time for the tournament is 7:00 a.m. Players will complete an 18-hole course in groups of four, individual Modified Stableford format, off full USGA Handicap. There are many fabulous prizes to be won but the top golfer in the competition will be awarded the coveted Vice Chancellor’s Trophy. Entry fee is US$100 which includes the green fees, cart & caddie, tee gift, range balls, UWI 60th souvenir golf shirt, Continental breakfast and on-course refreshment and Awards Cocktail Reception.
9:00 am Inter-Faith Thanksgiving Service

The Interfaith Service will be held on Sunday July 13, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. at the University Chapel as part of the special week of activities to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the University of the West Indies. The Service will involve members from various religions including the Bahai Faith, Judaism, Rastafarianism, the Hindu Faith and Christianity, among others. Rev. Dr. Roderick Hewitt, United Church Chaplain at UWI, Mona will be the Liturgist and the Homily will be delivered by Coadjutor Archbishop Donald Reece of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kingston. UWI Chaplains from the other Christian denominations will also participate in the service. The University Singers as well as the University Chorale will form the Choir.

Starting Convocation Week with a 'kick', JAZZ GOES TO UWI showcases the talents of alumni, members of staff and students in a spectacular concert on the lawns of the Vice Chancellor's residence on Sunday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. Visiting alumni and their guests can expect an evening of hypnotic, witty blending of the layered nuances of traditional 'straight ahead' Jazz and melodic, harmonic and rhythmic elements from the potent melting pot of the Caribbean - a captivating mix of traditions. All overseas based alumni and alumni resident in Jamaica are invited to visit the Halls of Residence – Irvine, Mary Seacole, Chancellor, Taylor, Preston and Nettleford on this day. Alumni will be given the opportunity to have informal discussions with students and will be taken on tour of the halls and shown the new facilities. Students will entertain the Alumni. There will be poster exhibitions featuring the achievements of alumni and the accomplishments and activities of current students. Refreshments will be offered. Campus tours are being planned.

Come - view - bid … and, perhaps, take home a wonderful piece of art. View exhibits from July 12 through 16 at the PSCCA and hear the winning bids announced at the Gala Black Tie Fundraising event on the evening of December 16. The Governor General of Jamaica, His Excellency the Most Honourable Professor Sir Kenneth O. Hall, himself an alumnus and former Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Mona Campus, will host a reception on Monday, July 14, 2008 as part of Convocation Week activities. The reception will be held on the Lawns of Kings House, the official residence of the Governor General. Invitees will include regional Prime Ministers and Heads of State attending Convocation Week, resident and visiting alumni, a cross section of the university community, and representatives of Government, the Private Sector and the Diplomatic Corps.

Members of the public and private sectors, government officials, alumni, present and past members of faculty and administration and members of the Debating Society will discuss the topic: “The UWI, an Agency for Regional Development and Change: Has it Succeeded?” The discussion is aimed at focusing the attention of the audience on the extent to which the UWI, over the past sixty years, has fulfilled its mission to “unlock the potential of the region” and how the institution can strategically re-position itself to further accomplish its goal. The symposium will be moderated by Chancellor Emeritus, Sir Shridath Ramphal, and will take place in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre on Tuesday, July 15 from 8.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. with a 30 minute coffee break. The University and the Public are invited.

The UWIAA (Jamaica Chapter) will be the main hosts for this fine morning affair which will give UWI alumni of all decades the chance to re-connect and share “Memories” over a delicious breakfast. Members of the UWI Engineering Alumni, CARIMAC, Medical, Business, Special students, Cave Hill, Mona, St. Augustine and Open Campus alumni, among others, are invited to come, reminisce and share wonderful recollections. “Pelican Pride” and fun activities will abound and participants will leave feeling satisfied in both body and mind, knowing that the funds raised from this event will go towards the UWI Regional Endowment Fund which will improve facilities and provide student scholarships and bursaries. 8:00 pm The University Singers in Concert
The University Singers celebrates is 50th Anniversary this year. The Year long celebrations will include special concerts and workshops at the Mona Campus, throughout the Caribbean and outside of the Caribbean region. During the UWI’s 60th Anniversary Convocation Week in July, the University Singers Homecoming Week and Gala Event on July 19 will take place. There will also be two concerts on Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18 at 8:00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts on the Mona Campus. Homecoming alumni, friends and well-wishers are invited to share the rich feast of choral theatre for which the University Singers have become famous.

The UWI Couples Luncheon – The University of the West Indies has celebrated many accomplishments in its 60 years of existence--from its renowned world class faculty, to its graduates and its research. However, one of its major accomplishments which seems to have gone unnoticed for several decades is its contributions to the development of the region through its matchmaking skills. (For graduates who are married to each other). For many who attended UWI, a degree or two were not the only pieces of paper which they derived from their attendance at this noble institution. To date, over 350 UWI couples have been identified, i.e. UWI graduates married to UWI graduates and what an impressive list. If there was any way to capture the contribution made by this august group the region and the world would be in awe of the scope of their talents.
The UWI Couples Luncheon will celebrate these couples and not only the personal contributions made in their respective fields but that of their off-springs who are almost all university graduates as well. What better way to really bring UWI’s true significance to this region into the consciousness of our societies. If you are a UWI graduate and have not yet registered in this exclusive club, please do so now. We want to know who you are and where you are, whether you will or will not be attending the event.
However, we are encouraging everyone to participate in what will be a fun-filled occasion of rekindling old friendships, meeting new friends and taking a stroll down memory lane.
