Project 1: User interface design of a web-based system for Istanbul air
pollution forecasting
Team size:1-3
Preq: IE417/CENG433
Lang: Languages required for implementation in this project:
such as PHP, Java
Tools: HTML editor such as Front page,
Dreamweaver, etc.
ProDescr:
Air pollution is one of the most important environmental problems in Istanbul.
Currently the metropolitan municipality of Istanbul has been monitoring air
pollutants in several monitoring stations from Catalca to Kartal. The web-based
system
http://www.ibb.gov.tr/index.htm
presents information about the current and the earlier periods of air pollution
conditions of the counties of Istanbul. There is not such a system, which
informs to people about the future trends of the air pollution situation in the
city. This is not only a Turkish national gap; but many developed countries have
not such a system. There are only very limited examples (cf.
http://turkish.wunderground.com/US/NY/New_York.html).
It is very difficult to predict the air pollution. However at Fatih University
were developed modern air pollution models published in peer-reviewed scientific
journals. The project is aimed to implement these models into a web-based
system, which based on forecasted meteorological data predicts the future
concentrations of the air pollutants. This system should report the results for
Internet users by the help of some geographical maps and warnings.
Publications in conference and international journal.
The structure of the design project is:
1. Collecting past meteorological and air pollution data
2. Applying the models for air pollution forecasting
3. Daily automatic collection of the forecasted meteorological data from
www.meteor.gov.tr
4. Prediction of the future pollutants concentrations
5. Presentation on a web site
6. Usability evaluation of the system
Project 2: User interface design
of a multimedia e-learning program

Tools:
|
German Web Training Development System WTDS (based on
Red Hat 6.2 / Windows NT/ 2000 and
Oracle Enterprise Edition 8.1.7) or e-learning program of Turkish company
VITAMINCILER
or of Turkish company
DATATRAINING
(Learning Management System written on Net platform
with C#, based on database Microsoft SQL Server 2000). |
ProDescr:
Usability study of selected MM e-learning program developed by German Web
Training Development System
WTDS or by Istanbul company
VITAMINCILER
(online learning programs in biology like
Canlılar ve Hayat; Kromozomlar ve Hücre
Bölünmesi; Dokular ve Sistemler) or Turkish company
DATATRAINING. Design of a prototypical multimedia e-learning program
(for example in biology together with a biology
teacher). Implementation in the company.
Optional: A method for usability evaluation of interactive web systems should be developed. An aggregated usability evaluation is calculated based on objective on-line data and on subjective off-line checklist data from a study of the users of a web interactive system. Modern
computational intelligence approaches like neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, etc. can be used. Experimental simulation study
based on MATLAB environment is carried out. Based on the results are developed proposals for usability improvement of the system. By this approach can be developed user-friendly interface, which reduce the user’s workload, ensures quicker access to the information needed, increases user’s workload, allows quicker training, etc.
The structure of the design project is:
1. Usability study of selected multimedia e-learning
program. Determination of usabilily problems of user interface
2. Design of prototype of new user interface
3. Usability evaluation of new prototype interface
Optional:
4. Application/modification/development of
computational intelligence based model for usability evaluation
5. Publications in conference and international
journal.

e-learning authoring system
