The University of the West Indies (UWI), Faculty of Social Sciences, in collaboration with the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), will host a Distinguished Lecture to commemorate the Year of Sir Arthur Lewis.
A former UWI Lecturer and Vice Chancellor (1959), Sir William Arthur Lewis was knighted in 1963, and won The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 1979.
The lecture, first in a series of Distinguished Lectures, will be delivered by Professor Norman Girvan at the Learning Resource Centre on Wednesday 20th February, 2008 from 7:00 p.m. Professor Girvan’s lecture is entitled, "Sir Arthur Lewis: A Man of His Time, and Ahead of His Time."
Norman Girvan is currently Professorial Research Fellow at the UWI Graduate Institute of International Relations. He has also served as Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), Professor of Development Studies, Director of SALISES, and head of the National Planning Agency of Jamaica.
He received his Bachelor’s degree in Economics of the University College of the West Indies and his PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics. He has published extensively on the political economy of development in the Caribbean and the Global South. He is the recipient of several honours and awards.
The University’s celebration of Lewis’ life and works is part of the ongoing UWI Nobel Laureate Celebrations, which began in 2007 with the Year of V.S. Naipaul, and which is scheduled to end in 2009 with the Year of Derek Walcott.
