UWI and TSTT Celebrate Six Decades of Commitment to the Caribbean

News Release issued August22,2008

The University of the West Indies (UWI) in collaboration with Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) officially launched the 2008/09 TSTT Directory featuring The UWI 60th Anniversary on Friday 22nd August, 2008, 9:30 a.m. at The Office of the Campus Principal, UWI, St. Augustine.

The University of the West Indies is proud that TSTT has chosen to partner with UWI to celebrate the 60th Anniversary milestone of this symbol of Caribbean integration with this special commemorative TSTT Directory Cover. The cover was designed by Mr. Shayam Karim, with photography by Mr. Arthur Sukhbir and features the Main Building of the old Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture. This building, built in the 1920s, became the Administration Building for the University’s second campus, based at St. Augustine, Trinidad in 1960. For decades, the UWI Administration Building has been a focal point for Campus management and student affairs, and an icon of the regional institution.

In 2008, The University of the West Indies celebrates 60 years as a University—having been established in Jamaica in 1948 as a subsidiary of the University College of London. Today, with its three physical campuses based in Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, and a virtual, open campus, UWI is spread across and serves more than 15 Caribbean states.

Over the past 60 years, UWI has built a tradition of excellence as the largest and most longstanding higher education provider in the English-speaking Caribbean, and has earned a world-class reputation of scholarship, through its network of over 80,000 graduates who are at the forefront of Caribbean and global thought, imagination and action.
