The Sustainable Economic Development Unit (SEDU) for Small and Island Developing States (SIDS) invites you to participate in our annual conference to be held on March 27th, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00p.m. and March 28th, 2009 from 9:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. at the Faculty of Social Sciences Lounge, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus.

This year’s conference will be carried out with the support of the UNESCO Kingston Cluster Office for the Caribbean.   This year’s conference theme, “Bridging the Gap between Research and Policy for Sustainable Development in Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS),” reflects the Unit’s continued efforts to deepen discussions on how research institutions and Units such as UWI/SEDU, international organisations such as UNESCO and national and regional civil society can collaborate to bridge the gap between research and policy so that our countries can meaningfully achieve sustainable development.  The theme is also consistent with SEDU’s mission to “conduct empirical and theoretical research and facilitate interdisciplinary work on the most promising policies for Sustainable Economic Development in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).”

One of the highlights of the conference is a planned panel discussion among several current and/or former high level national and regional policy makers. During the conference we will also present other policy-oriented research, completed by SEDU and others on sustainable economic development challenges and issues in the region.
