About The Pelican

The University of the West Indies and the 16 Caribbean countries in which this regional institution is anchored, are undergoing a period of immense regional and global change.

In a world where "education and knowledge capital" are increasingly demonstrated as sources of competitive advantage, first-rate tertiary education in diverse disciplines has become a necessary component of regional competitiveness and sustained development. While the main role of universities and colleges in our region is seen as providing education to students seeking undergraduate degrees, it is equally important that there exists capacity for postgraduate and continuing education and that we play a central role in research that can drive creation of new products and services and address our most challenging problems.

The University of the West Indies is today providing undergraduate, graduate, research and knowledge creation and outreach to the English-speaking Caribbean, in partnership with national community colleges and universities. We are working tirelessly to broaden access to quality tertiary education.

The Pelican celebrates these and other achievements. This bi-annual publication turns the spotlight on the achievements of our faculty, alumni and regional leaders as we pursue our goal of being:

  • First in providing high quality, Caribbean relevant undergraduate and graduate programmes
  • First in knowledge development and research in the Caribbean and the leader in the world in providing new knowledge about "all things Caribbean"
  • First as a centre of intellectual growth and development in the Caribbean and the port of First Call for Caribbean governments, businesses and other organizations seeking strategic and policy advice.

The University of the West Indies family has much to be proud of. In Pelican we celebrate our many contributions to regional growth and development.
