PROFILE

Dr. Dale Webber is a Coastal Ecologist with over 15 years experience in the environmental field. He is currently Director of the Centre for Marine Science, lectures courses in Ecology, Coastal Plant Ecosystems and Coastal Zone Management and has successfully supervised over 20 Masters and five PhD graduate students. Much of his research has been pivotal to the policy and decisions of the Jamaican government though the Natural Resource Conservation Authority where he also serves as Chairman of the National Ramsar Committee on Jamaica’s wetland management. A major milestone was the 2003 publication of a special volume of the international Journal ‘Bulletin of Marine Science’ dedicated to research in the Kingston Harbour. Dr. Webber has served UWI administratively as Sub-Dean, Student Matters in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences (1997-2001), and as Head of the Department of Life Sciences (2003-2007). He was joint recipient of the 2003/04 Principal’s Research Award at Mona Campus, the 2000 “Silver Musgrave Medal” from the Institute of Jamaica for distinguished eminence in the field of Science Education, the 1993 Scientific Research Council/Shell “Young Scientist/Technologist Award 1993” and “Young Scientist Award 1988” from the Third World Academy of Sciences.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr. Webber’s research areas include coastal water quality, circulation and ecology towards wise use and best management. He has published over 40 papers on a range of marine, coastal and environmental topics of national and regional importance including Jamaica’s programme of action for marine pollution from land-based sources and activities, The Jamaica South Coast Sustainable Development Study; The Management of the Black River Lower Morass; Rapid Ecological Assessment of Kingston Harbour; Planning and Management of Heavily Contaminated bays and Coastal Areas in the Wider Caribbean; The Management Plan for The Falmouth Wetlands and the Martha Brae River Estuary Management project.
